The portfolio, inside the portfolio.

Most portfolios are one layout filled with different content. This one is the opposite: the content is fixed, and the way you move through it changes. Pick a theme on the welcome page, or switch with the buttons on the right edge without losing the page you are on.

How it works

Projects, collaborators and the profile come from one source: my GitHub activity and LinkedIn profile, fetched when the site is built, plus a few hand-written files. Every theme reads the same data and gives it a purpose:

  • Corporate: the familiar page, fast and predictable.
  • Space: relationships between projects, people and skills.
  • Reel: a story told by scrolling, like a film.
  • Cocktail: say what you feel like, and it recommends.
  • Grove: growth over time.
  • Voxel: a block world to explore, still a work in progress.

Every visual view has a plain twin (a list of the same things) for screen readers, small screens or browsers without scripts, and switching theme morphs the shared elements from one layout into the other.

Things to poke at

The helper that walks where you click, the crossword and the Fourier drawing live on their own page, Portfolio toys. A few secrets are hidden around the site, and the achievements you find are listed at the bottom of the home page.

What I took from it

  • Treating the layout as the variable and the data as the constant made every theme cheaper than the one before.
  • A decorative experience is only acceptable if the plain version is first-class.
