The Epitech Dashboard project asks for a web page where each person arranges widgets with live data from the services they use: their calendar, their mail, the song playing on Spotify, the weather. Behind every widget is the same hard problem: the server must talk to those services on the person’s behalf, later, even when they are not on the page.
We decided that problem deserved its own tool, so the project is really two: the dashboard, and JustBetterAuth, a sign-in and account-linking library written from scratch for it. Built with Manny Bray–Mahinc, started in September 2026 and still in progress.
How it works
JustBetterAuth keeps each person’s access to other services safely encrypted, renews it on its own when it expires, and lets someone link several accounts of the same service. It guards the corner cases where sign-in systems usually break: two renewals at once, a renewal lost halfway, someone claiming an email address before its owner arrives.
The dashboard is a grid you arrange freely, with several named boards in tabs, and widgets can follow each other without code: a lyrics widget that follows the song Spotify is playing. It is built to be fully usable with the keyboard and to meet the French and international accessibility standards from the first screen.
What I took from it
- Writing the specification first, with tests for each step, made it possible to build a security library in small slices that each stay green.
- The interesting security bugs live in the corners, so the corners got their own tests.
